If you ask somebody who is at the end of their life what they wish they’d done or had more or less of, they’re unlikely to say ‘I wish I’d had another car’, they’re likely to say they wish they hadn’t worried about the little things as much, that they wish they’d experienced more love or more happiness, or just that they had experienced more in general.

Most people would not consider themselves to be wealthy, yet this is just a matter of perspective. We make comparisons and comparatively we may not seem wealthy, if you consider the level of wealth that some people have. If, instead of comparing ourselves to the people above us (the minority), we compare ourselves with the overwhelming majority of people in the world (and throughout history), it is evident that we live in comparative luxury. This fact is easy to lose sight of when we are constantly confronted with the minority in the corporate media. People begin to think that they are lacking when they are persistently presented with the top 1%, in terms of wealth and (perceived) beauty, and this generates fear of not fitting in or being accepted. This then feeds the consumer market as everyone strives to achieve some standard that is beyond their reach.

This all just seems so artificial. Does projecting a façade, under which you feel more comfortable and a bit freer of this often imagined scrutiny, make you a successful person? To many people, self-improvement does not mean becoming stronger emotionally or mentally, or becoming more understanding, wise and accepting. Instead it means becoming more tanned, getting new clothes, a new haircut or even new, better (because they are more glamorous) friends. We are projecting an image to mask our insecurities while neglecting what lies beneath, until many people are not even sure what is inside the exterior they are trying to create.

We seek respect, not by virtue of our character and the effect that we create in the world, but by virtue of spinning an illusion, the caricature we present to others in the hope that they’ll like what they see. During moments of reflection, people often remark ‘What’s the point in it all?’ exhausted by the strain of acting the part. Life seems confusing and sometimes overwhelming when we are second guessing people’s reactions and playing to a perceived audience. We are working backwards from that point, paying attention to what we are projecting outwards, instead of looking inwards. It’s like decorating the mirror in an effort to change our appearance, but unless we change ourselves, and can therefore present a genuine representation, the illusion will eventually breakdown and be revealed in our weaker moments. Thus we have achieved the opposite of what we intended, because the reality we were trying to hide is emphasised in contrast with the illusion we have been trying to maintain.

True self-improvement will bring about the things we desire as a natural effect. The things that I admire personally (and I’m sure I’m not alone) are modesty, kindness, compassion, reliability, respect for others, wisdom and confidence. These things can only be achieved once we master the naïve egotism that is so prevalent in society today, and break free of the fear-based, insecurity-driven psychology of the consumer. If we resolve to take control of our lives and master our own faults and weaknesses we are already infinitely more successful in life than ever before. Everything we want come about from this simple beginning. If what we seek is self-knowledge and to become wise, everything else will proceed from there. It may be a clichéd concept, but you can build the most magnificent, impressive structure and, without the right foundations, it is worthless and will not stand the test of time. Money and the trappings of wealth do not make people happy. Often they are distractions to divert our attention away from the emptiness we would feel without them. True happiness comes from being content with things as they are, however they are. If we constantly strive for that bit more we will never be satisfied.

So what is all this ‘waring’ about then. Why are the USA running around being the bullies of the world. Well, you know what they say: “Follow the money.”

This post isn’t so much about whether the USA should have more gun control or not this is about how Alex did with his opportunity to make his case. For me, he did badly. Now, if you like this guy I’m sorry but I’m about to poo poo your hero. It’s not that I completely disagree with the guy I don’t. Focusing on guns alone as a problem doesn’t really help, yes I do get that. As Alex rightly pointed out, here in the UK just because there is a low rate of gun deaths doesn’t necessarily mean there is also a low rate of violent crime. Knife crime in this country is an awful reality for many victims over the years. A complete ban on guns won’t really solve the problem in america; does banning drugs stop people from taking them?

In essence, having tougher gun control is not the whole solution. The wide spread mental health issues and the poor pharmaceuticals being used ‘cure’ the problem has evidence to suggest that it can cause violent and suicidal behaviour. However, guns being restricted to people who are not nuts is not a measure anyone can really argue against; it’s an argument that applies to members of the public, members of the state and military alike.

My mind is drawn back to Michael Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine”; this is a man who knows how to put a forward a case! He is also great at condensing his point: Early in his film he asks a bank clerk “Here’s my first question, isn’t it dangerous handing out guns in a bank?” He is passionate, he get’s emotional about his subject sometimes but he put’s a case forward. After the massacre in the USA on the 14th of December Michael had this to say:

You don’t have to agree with everything he says but it all holds weight. There is a Roman maxim of law that says that the language of truth is simple. This is a perfect example of what they were talking about; Alex ended up making this too complicated.

Piers Morgan probably expected him to dis-credit himself anyway. Hence the invite on to his show. Launching a petition to the US government to attack an individual causes him a problem in his argument straight away. Firstly, it’s childish. Secondly, it’s distracting from the issue and is an attempt to try and pin the potential of a ‘great catastrophe of liberty’ on one person: ‘What are we all to do!? Pierce Morgan is going to take the guns away!’ Alex has created an issue to attach to the gun crime debate and forced Pierce to take action. Pierce in fact did the best thing possible from his point of view; he confronted him face to face on live TV. This is how predictable and quite frankly stupid Alex Jones was. To try and say that it was a stunt to highlight an issue is going to be pushing it. He wouldn’t play the game Pierce wanted to play because he didn’t feel adequately concise and intelligent enough to be able to handle the debate and beat him at his own tactic.

After a promising first 45 seconds or so from Alex, Pierce attempts to say something in response to the ‘second amendment’ argument and also uses the India rape issue as an example of the consequence of having gun control in place. “Wait a minute!” as Alex tries to draw attention to some statistics. I’m presuming that Pierce was thinking something along the lines of that he was’t talking about taking guns away completely. Pierce had already said that he wanted control on guns like machine guns, not remove guns altogether. We’ll never know because at the end of a rant about crime levels and despotic regimes removing guns before they installed themselves, like a man possessed Alex shouts “1776 will commence again if you take our fire arms!”

Pierce Morgan’s audience must have thought to themselves “What the fuck is this guy talking about? Pierce Morgan isn’t going to take anyone’s guns away, he just has an opinion about it.” However, Alex Jones was pointing the finger at him! Maybe he was doing what he thought the Alex Jones faithful wanted him to do? In fact I have seen comments on you tube claiming that Pierce Morgan ‘got owned’. I beg to differ. All Pierce had to do was say very little because Alex was aware that he had very little time to get a magnitude of points out that had probably been simmering inside him on the journey there. Alex Jones Exploded and made some mistakes as a result.

He could have had a brilliant debate if he had just left the subjective stuff behind and kept his head a bit more. But instead he left Pierce having to say ‘calm down’ and not being able to get anything going. Even if Pierce was going to attempt to steer opinion by his questioning he didn’t need to. When a guy says to a seemingly intelligent calm articulate man things like “Think you’re a tough guy!” and offer a boxing match and try to cover many highly contentious issues surrounding regimes and then to start talking in a Queen style English accent is not going to have credibility. “I speak in this accent as well!”. After that English accent rant Pierce turns to the camera and says “This is the man that wants to have me deported.” For me that’s Pierce 1 Alex 0. Every issue that Alex brought up, to the mainstream audience watching became ridiculous.

Some of Alex’s fans loved it I know but this is why I’m not a fan. He is the main cause of the ‘crazy conspiracy theory’ defence that any power system is now able to use. I’m sorry if Alex Jones is your hero but he’s certainly not mine. It’s a bit like buying a record of a band that you like but going off them once you see them live; the truth about what you became a fan of comes out. I personally I am a big fan of Max Keiser. This is him ‘live’ in a place that is not his own show. So if you’re a fringe media host who like to do a lot of shouting and saying weird and crazy stuff for entertainment but then the mainstream invites you on THIS is how you handle yourself: stick to the issue, debate properly and don’t act like a moron.
